Scandinavian Cruiser 20 – Classic One-Design Day-Boat
BySailing the Scandinavian Cruiser 20 for two warm and sunny days on November 25-26, 2009 with light wind of 5-10 knots in Xiamen, China. The water and air temperature was around 25C (80F). I wish sailing could be like this every day! In this 2.5 minute video you watch the first test sailing of the Scandinavian Cruiser 20 on September 26, 2009. The idea behind Scandinavian Cruisers is to recapture the essence of sailing, by going back in time to a period a century ago when boats were considered truly beautiful, and sailing was a genteel, aspirational and romantic lifestyle. Scandinavian Cruisers combines the style, beauty, high speed and superior maneuverability of classic Skerry Cruisers (Square Meter Yachts) with todays busy modern lifestyle and the latest technologies. The design of Scandinavian Cruisers is admired equally by experienced sailors and landlubbers, giving the owner true pride of ownership. It seems like an updated, superficially old-fashioned, Flying Fifteen.

Uffa Fox was an important mentor for our project. He was a great designer and boat builder, and his Flying Fifteen was at the cutting edge of technology at the time when he developed it. We are hoping that the Scandinavian Cruiser will one day be recognized for the same achievement in our time.

Fantastic! I think she’s more BB11 than Flying Fifteen. I have owned a BB11 in the UK for fifteen years, and always been impressed by the sea-keeping abilities of the boat. It is great to see the beauty of the skerry cruisers being updated, the very best of luck with getting the class established.
All the best

Hi Greg,
The Norwegian sailing magazine “Sailas” called the Scandinavian Cruiser 20 the 20th century BB11.
Best regards

whats it look like in 25 knots?
December 31st, 2009 at 3:25 am
25 knots is OK for me. Let go together if it is ok for you. I suspect that she will be planing…
She is a very light boat so she will sail above the waves rather than ploughing through them.

I was just looking around, I used to be really into sailing and a sailboat, but it just looks like so much fun… I got to go catamaran sailing, and because of my love for wind sports, got a windsurfer for my birthday. However, when i’m older, I would deffinatly consider a boat like this.

It’s gorgeous! What is the minimum sailor weight for this boat?
January 10th, 2010 at 3:06 am
Ivanna,
If you can sail a SKUD 18 then you can easily sail the Scandinavian Cruiser 20.
There will not be any minimum weight in our class rules. I sailed her alone, and as you can see it worked well in light air. In heavy air it is better to be two people, and to use the trapeze. For a leisure cruise you can even fit in 2 adults and a child.

The Timber Point 23 is beautiful. Yes it seems to have inspired the Scandinavian Cruiser 20, which by the way is for sale. You can visit the main web site for US distributor information.
