@Craigprime1 passion my balls. Her failure just goes to prove how inexperienced she is. This is just another media attracting stunt. She should be at home cracking the books.

To all the critics and pundits, your ignorance and total lack of sailing experience is obvious. I sail local British Columbia waters and absolutely blanch whenever I get into sea-states that get heavier than I can handle.
On the other hand, Abby has conquered that fear through experience that I’ve never had. She’s 16…. I’m 50, and Abby is MY HERO. She has truly/literally forgotten more about sailing in blue water (deep ocean) sailing than I and most of you will ever know.

con’t… Abby has done battle with waves as tall as three-story buildings and won…. & now lost. Why? She suffered a “final” knockdown that snapped her mast.
Was Abby prepared to survive such an event. Unquestionably! Did she survive? Obviously! Why? Because she knew the risks, accepted them and, thanks to her parents and brother, she knew how to deal with those eventualities. Kudo’s to her family for her very good and thorough training.

(con”t….)
That training has probably saved her life and I am delighted! She proves to me that I can survive such conditions with proper training and for that I am grateful.. Until now I doubted myself so she has truly inspired me. Thank you Abby!’
Will I now do it? Absolutely not! I could never deal with the incredible stress of sailing the southern ocean… solo… and watching buildings crash down on me.. You’re a brave girl Abby and you will always be my hero! Fair winds!

Let people like Abby follow their dreams, I say. Just don’t let them expect to be bailed out to the tune of hundreds of thousands of dollars, and put the lives of their rescuers at risk. Did she take out travel insurance? I do whenever I leave my country, and I take appropriate precautions. The parents of this immature girl should be charged with child neglect and be compelled to repay the Australian government for the cost of this folly.

@7477238
They weren’t interested in repaying the Australians who rescued her…they were too busy begging for money to have her tub salvaged. I’m ashamed, as an Australian, that my tax dollars were squandered on her foolish venture. She should have been in school studying to be a productive member of the human race instead of being used by her parents for this lunacy.

@lochinvar00465
However, often grateful people make at least a token to repay for their rescue – google Robert Bogucki, for example. In Ms Sunderland’s case all she did was beg for money to salvage her useless boat. Ingrates – next time she enters Australian territory I hope that she’s arrested as an illegal and placed in a detention centre until her debt has been repaid.

@robi2000
Clearly in the Sunderlands’ case home schooling is disastrous. If the best they can produce is Abby and Zac they should be prevented from further breeding.

@robi2000
Australians have rescued FAR more of these losers than the Americans ever have. Name the last Aussie rescued by the American government under remotely similar circumstances, Robi.
Americans woldn’t mention it if the tables were turned??? BWAHAHAHAHAHA…I’ve never heard anything as ridiculous in my life, Americans never shut up about their achievements, no matter how minor.
July 8th, 2010 at 1:16 pm
@BadgerBoi it cost ‘hundreds of thousands’ to rescue a girl ? Quit complaing. They chose to go. If they were so worried about the cost, they would have stayed on course.
July 8th, 2010 at 1:32 pm
@robi2000 It cost between $200,000 and $300,000 to mount the search for that ill-prepared child – you appear to be totally ignorant of the circumstances surrounding her rescue. Her parents should be charged with neglect – and don’t tell me that if the tables were turned and it was an Aussie girl saved by the American taxpayer you wouldn’t be complaining.
Now, do me a favour and name the last Aussie rescued by Americans under similar circumstances.

It would have been nice if, instead of begging for cash to salvage the boat, she and her family appealed for money to repay some of the cost of the rescue. Even a token gesture would have made them appear to be sincere.
I hope she stays home and hits the books from now on and becomes a functioning and worthwhile member of society.
July 8th, 2010 at 1:44 pm
@BadgerBoi if they were concerned about the money, why did they bother to start the search ? Did they contact her parents and tell them the cost ? Did they tell the parents there would be a cost and that it would have to be paid ?
July 8th, 2010 at 1:52 pm
@BadgerBoi and isn’t her father Australian ? Seems to me from some of the radio broadcasts i’ve heard from Australian radio during the search that Australians wanted to help.
July 8th, 2010 at 1:54 pm
@BadgerBoi But yeah sure . I’ll agree that her parents should attempt to pay some of the cost or all if they can. Especially if those who rescued her ask for compensation. I admit though, i don’t know the rules of the sea.
July 8th, 2010 at 5:22 pm
She did something totally awesome. I would have liked to do what she did. Actually, being at sea by myself in the tough winds would just be awesome. She was a bit young though. Even though she was probably as ready as anybody, we probably shouldn’t allow it because it sets certain precedents and create a certain slippery slope. Probably one should do this only after a high-school degree. anyway, she did it and I think it was positive.
July 8th, 2010 at 11:50 pm
@BadgerBoi Well I’m Canadian so I guess we’re unaffected by this but I agree that every penny ought to be paid to the Aussie Government, if the Aussie Government does not recieve it they should pursue the Sunderland family. I can’t believe some of the shallow comments here saying that we should let others pursue their dreams. Yes people should pursue their dreams but within reasonable taken. I wanna travel too but damn I’d take out insurance and take the proper meds and what not.

Abby you are a piece of shitttt
August 27th, 2010 at 10:55 am
Shes no Jessica Watson. Oh and to all those people pro following your dreams – by all means do so, but dont do it dangerously, and moronically for ALL the wrong reasons (money). Abby’s dad should go to prison for attempted murder – putting her life at risk in the southern ocean at that time of year. To Abby’s dad – your are a jerk and Abby, did you ever REALLY think you could do it? like, i like thought i could like sail like around the world like you sound like a spoiled brat that knows NOTHING
August 30th, 2010 at 10:58 pm
@BadgerBoi Do you really think normal life is so exciting that someone can be satisfied to live as a member of society? If I ever got the chance I would do what she did. Shes doing something more with her life than being just a part of society.
September 1st, 2010 at 11:49 pm
She sould have never been out there……The southern Oceans in winter???WTF! Then they left the boat adrift a danger to navigation! Born Again’s trying to make free money!
